FlashGear Information
What is FlashGear?
FlashGear is the name given to the garments that we sell that have the `Electroluminescence Panel' integrated into the garment. This allows designs or text to flash on the outer area in a predetermined pattern.
What is Electroluminescence?
Electroluminescence is an optical and electrical phenomenon. It is a light emission response of a material when a electrical current is passed through it. This is different from light emission resulting from heat (incandescence) or from the action of chemicals (chemo luminescence). Electroluminescence is the conversion of electricity directly into light.
Electroluminescent (EL) device is similar to a laser in that photons are produced by the return of an excited substance to its ground state, but unlike lasers EL devices require much less energy to operate and do not produce coherent light.
Electroluminescent displays have at least six layers. The first layer is a base plate (usually a rigid insulator like glass), the second is a conductor, the third is an insulator, the fourth is a layer of phosphors, and the fifth is an insulator, and the sixth is another conductor. The insulator layers are necessary to prevent arcing between the two conductive layers.
Are the FlashGear garments safe to use, they have wiring inside?
Yes! FlashGear garments have wires in them to carry the low voltage to the flashing panel but the voltage is safe - 4 AAA (disposable alkaline) batteries each at 1.5v.
How Are The Garments Cleaned?
FlashGear has circuitry as an integral part of the garment and the FlashGear panels can easily be damaged by submersing in water; therefore the only cleaning guides are as follows:
- Remove the battery pack before attempting any cleaning. The area around the FlashGear panel can be hand washed with a normal handwashing detergent - taking care not to submerse the FlashGear panel.
